EarthWays Center has Green Resources You Can Use

Check out Missouri Botanical Garden's urban "green" house

EarthWays CenterThe handsome Victorian-era city home on Grandel Square was a total wreck – a derelict brick shell – back in the early 1990s. Like so many other older city homes, this building was a great candidate for a gut rehab. And what a visionary overhaul this house has had, thanks to local environmentalists who researched every aspect of building materials, methods, products and systems to demonstrate potentials for sustainable home building. Welcome to the EarthWays Center!

Today's visitors feel the gracious warmth of 1880s hospitality stepping into the oak-paneled entrance hall, and go on to explore 21st century options for sustainable living.

Examples of things to see:

  • Solar panels powering high-efficiency kitchen appliances
  • Geothermal heating and cooling
  • Energy-efficient indoor and exterior lighting
  • Water-saving Green Roof, native plant landscaping, rain barrel and pervious paving
  • Seven kinds of sustainable flooring
  • Super insulation and other money-saving construction and remodeling options
  • Non-toxic home maintenance products
  • Near-zero waste composting and recycling systems

A positive message to visitors of all ages promotes many ways to combine comfort with efficiency and reduce consumption of our planet's limited natural resources. Free handouts provide practical guidelines for greening new and existing homes.
