Tips to Declutter
Posted 3/4/2010 7:00:00 AM
It’s close to that time of year to start spring cleaning, but before that why don’t we take a look at the clutter that might be consuming our house. This is an easy process to get us prepared for the spring cleaning to come.

Some easy steps to start the de-cluttering process are:

1.) Toss the obvious. Toss out expired coupons, food, makeup that is more than one year old, worn socks, and etc... I’m sure you get the point here.

2.) Paper makes up one-quarter of all landfill waste this includes junk mail, so help put an end to it. You can do this by registering for the Mail Preference Service on Direct Marketing Association. The price of this is only a $1, your name and address will then be removed from prospective mailing lists. Around 75% of junk mail you receive will end within about 90 days.

3.) Empty your closet! Have a fashion show to try on all of those clothes and decide which ones are worth keeping. To those clothes that are not there are many ways you can get rid of them: donate them, have a garage sale, or sell them via ebay, craigslist or another source that you may know of. You can do this with all of your closets not just the one in your bedroom.

4.) Revisit your local library! Go through those old magazines and books. Instead of buying more reading material just go to the library where you can check out books, DVDs, periodicals, and more.

5.) Try to stay ahead of clutter, which can take up to as little as 15 minutes. This can be done by watching what you bring home, making a decision on what you want to keep, and staying current by doing something simple as hanging up your clothes every night.
