What is LEED?

LEED for Homes is a rating system that promotes the design and construction of high-performance green homes. A green home uses less energy, water and natural resources, creates less waste, and is healthier and more comfortable for occupants. Benefits of a LEED home include lower energy and water bills; reduced greenhouse gas emissions; and less exposure to mold, mildew and other indoor toxins. The net cost of owning a LEED home is comparable to that of owning a conventional home.

Home Construction

"Green housing" is popping up around St. Louis and the nation, and many are wondering what it means and if it really can make a difference.

Eco HomeIn real terms, "going green" in housing construction runs the spectrum from energy efficient construction, appliances and hvac systems (Energy Star says the typical traditional house loses 15 to 20 percent of its heat or air from ducts alone) to solar panels and use of sustainable materials like bamboo flooring, wool carpets and recycled wood, steel and even insulation.

Money Magazine reports that energy savings is the leading reasons buyers give for building green, although many homeowners simply like the idea of minimizing their environmental footprint. Building costs can be 20 to 30 percent more than traditional construction, but often it is much lower - in the low single digits.

If you are planning a green homebuilding project, make sure you have architects, builders and contractors who have strong experience in this area. You'll need to rely heavily on their knowledge and skills to make sure you are getting the full benefit of your eco-vision.
