Make Recycling and Composting a Family Affair:

  1. Set up bins in the garage or outside for your family to help recycle.
  2. Engage children in helping with the regular task of taking the bins for curbside pickup or to a centralized recycling facility.
  3. Have them help set up a composting site in your yard or neighborhood, and help "stir" the
contents on a regular basis - a first-hand view of the benefits of conservation as leaves, grass and kitchen waste combine to make rich nutrients for your garden.

The Green Family

This is our children's world to inherit, which leads many parents and
educators to set a strong foundation for their kids to be aware of,
respect and contribute to environmental solutions of all scales.

Eco-responsibility begins with your environment at home, in the community and at school, taking every opportunity to reinforce each individual's role in helping the environment.

Children learn by doing and through example, and there are many ways to engage your family in becoming good environmental stewards:

  • Switch off and unplug - Encourage your children to help turn off
lights and other power-consuming household devices. Put them in charge of helping your family save energy and money by "little things" that add up to a lot.
  • Take it outside - Educate your children on the environmental
aspects of extraneous computer and video usage as a way of encouraging outdoor and other healthy physical activity.
  • Nature walks - Sensitizing your family to everyday nature is a
great way to promote environmental awareness. Take walks around the neighborhood or any one of St. Louis' many remarkable parks to keep your children interested in the outside natural world.
