Eco-Friendly Transportation

As concern about global warming rises, most Americans are wondering what they can do to reduce the effects of air pollutants and greenhouse gases caused by their own transportation habits.

According to the EPA, transportation accounts for approximately 30 percent of total U.S. greenhouse emissions, and is the fastest-growing source of emissions and the largest end-use source of CO2, the most prevalent greenhouse gas.

What can you do to reduce air pollution caused by transportation? One of the best ways is simply to drive and fly less. Think about taking the bus, train, biking or even walking. Carpooling, vanpooling and telecommuting are other viable options. St. Louis’ MetroLink is convenient, inexpensive and safe.

Of course, fuel-efficient cars are growing in popularity. While the price of these vehicles is still a barrier for many households,  there are many things you can do to keep your traditional car, van or truck from guzzling excessive gas while minimizing emissions. Drive at or below the speed limit, maintain your vehicle’s service on a regular basis, and use clean fuels. Lightening your vehicle’s cargo also will save on fuel efficiency.
