Green Driving

Greening Your Wheels

Whether you’ve purchased a new fuel-efficient vehicle or simply are looking for ways to “green-up” your traditional car, truck or motorcycle, there are everyday measures you can take to make sure you’re being a good environmental steward on the road while saving on fuel costs. Here are a few recommended by the Environmental Defense Fund:

  • Keep Up with Tune-ups. Keeping your engine properly tuned can save you up to 165 gallons of gas per year. Checking spark plugs, oxygen sensors, air filters, hoses and belts are a few examples of maintenance that can result in potential savings of over $400.
  • Lighten the Load. Every additional 100 pounds you carry in your vehicle reduces fuel economy by 2 percent. If you need luggage and can spare the room inside the car rather than in the trunk to minimize drag and achieve better fuel efficiency.
  • Mind Your Driving Habits. In highway driving, surpassing the speed limit even by five mph results in a 6 percent loss in fuel efficiency. Rapid acceleration and braking also burn more fuel, so try to maintain a steady and smooth pace and ease into stops and ramp-ups.
  • Check Tire Pressure. Low tire pressure wastes more than 2 million gallons of gas every day in the United States. Have your tires aligned regularly and keep them properly inflated.
  • Combine or Eliminate Trips. Eliminating one 20-mile trip each week can reduce your contribution to global warming by more than 1,200 pounds of carbon emissions a year. One day a week, if all commuters worked from home, shared a ride or took public transportation, it would save 5.85 billion gallons of oil and eliminate more than 65 million metric tons of carbon dioxide every year.
  • One Parking Maneuver, Several Stores. When you go to a strip mall and have more than one store to visit, try to stop once and walk rather than driving to your different destinations.
  • Stretch Your Oil Changes. Many Americans have their vehicle oil changed more often than necessary, which puts an added burden on the waste stream and wastes natural resources. Check with your manufacturer, dealer or service shop for the recommended interval between oil and filter changes.
  • To Idle or Restart? Idling for more than 10 seconds uses more gas and emits more carbon missions into the atmosphere than restarting your car. In cold weather, experts say the best way to warm up a car is to drive it. When the temperature is below freezing, give your engine just 30 seconds before you put the car in drive.
  • Air on the Side of Efficiency. Having the a/c on reduces your fuel efficiency by as much as 12 percent in city traffic, so when you can, roll down the windows. At higher speeds, having your windows open weakens the efficiency of your vehicle, so try to use the car’s vents or keep the a/c on low.

Solvent-based paints use hazardous chemical compounds to thin pigment solids for smooth applications. They are less toxic, less flammable, have low VOC levels and improve workers' health. Low VOC levels help reduce the creation of harmful ozone smog and reduce severe health problems. Paint guns are cleaned with water-based solutions rather than chemicals.
